I have to admit to only ever hearing this word in Australia and having to ask what it meant. But I always thought it was 'per-goal-a' too.
Yes, it's a bit of a strange word in any event. Feel free to join me in punching people in the nose who say it the wrong way. Or something less violent if it suits you, maybe just cruelly mocking them until they pronounce it correctly.
